in 2010 a former openbsd dev called gregory perry just emailed theo de raadt that actually around 2000-2001 he and some other openbsd developers (some even mentioned by name) had worked together with the fbi to implement backdoors into openbsd’s ipsec stack and that those are still there

not only had the relevant code been refactored and rewritten several times in the time since, but one of the developers explicitly named even came forward to say perry is full of shit which the ensuing code reviews all but confirmed (they found absolutely nothing)

and all of this leaves so many hilarious options for what happened like

  • the fbi got a backdoor in and it was never discovered, however someone accidentally removed it during a code refactor perry wasnt aware of
  • the fbi got a backdoor in and its actually just so well hidden noone found it to this day, a decade after it had been disclosed
  • perry was fucking trolling
